Verifying ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation for Peptide Testing Labs

A certificate of analysis is only as reliable as the laboratory that issued it. Researchers evaluating a peptide COA often focus on the numbers on the page: purity percentage, mass confirmation, endotoxin result. Fewer stop to ask a more basic question: is the laboratory that generated those numbers actually competent to do so, and can that competence be independently confirmed? That question is answered by accreditation, specifically ISO/IEC 17025, the international standard for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories.
What ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation Actually Certifies
ISO/IEC 17025 is a management and technical standard published jointly by the International Organization for Standardization and the International Electrotechnical Commission. It sets requirements for a laboratory's quality system, staff competence, equipment calibration, method validation, measurement traceability, and handling of test items. A laboratory does not accredit itself. Instead, an independent national accreditation body audits the laboratory against the standard, on-site and periodically, and issues a scope of accreditation listing the exact test methods the lab has demonstrated it can perform correctly.
This distinction matters. A laboratory can hold ISO 9001 certification, which addresses general quality management, without ever having its analytical methods technically audited. ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation is method-specific and technically rigorous in a way that broader quality certifications are not. When a COA states that a laboratory is "ISO certified" without naming the specific standard and accreditation body, that phrasing deserves a second look.
Why the Testing Laboratory Matters as Much as the Manufacturer
A synthesis or manufacturing site can operate a clean process and still produce a misleading COA if the analytical testing behind it is weak. Common weak points include uncalibrated HPLC systems, reference standards of unknown provenance, analysts without documented method training, and result reporting that omits raw chromatograms or spectra. None of these failures are visible from the finished certificate alone unless the reader knows what to check.

Reading a COA for Laboratory Identity and Scope
Laboratory name and accreditation body
A trustworthy COA names the testing laboratory directly, along with the accreditation body that audits it and a certificate or registration number. Regional accreditation bodies include the Emirates International Accreditation Centre in the UAE, the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation and NVLAP in the United States, and UKAS in the United Kingdom. These bodies are themselves peer-evaluated members of the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation, which maintains mutual recognition arrangements so that accreditation issued in one member country is recognised as equivalent internationally.
Scope of accreditation
Accreditation is not a blanket status. A laboratory's scope lists the specific test methods and matrices it is accredited for, for example reverse-phase HPLC purity determination or LAL endotoxin testing on a defined class of compounds. A lab can be legitimately accredited for one method while running another, unrelated method outside its accredited scope. A rigorous COA either states that the specific test was performed within the lab's accredited scope or makes clear which results are accredited and which are supplementary, non-accredited data.
How to Independently Verify an Accreditation Claim
Because accreditation bodies maintain public registries, a stated claim can usually be checked without contacting the laboratory. The general process is:
- Identify the accreditation body named on the COA and locate its public accredited-laboratory directory.
- Search the directory by laboratory name or certificate number, not by the manufacturer's name, since the testing lab and the manufacturer are often different entities.
- Confirm the laboratory's status is current rather than expired or suspended, and that the accredited scope actually covers the method cited on the certificate.
- Where the accreditation body is unfamiliar, check whether it appears in the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation's list of signatory bodies, which indicates it participates in the mutual recognition framework rather than operating as a self-styled certifier.

Common Red Flags
Several patterns should prompt closer scrutiny of a COA's testing basis. A certificate that lists no laboratory name at all, only a generic "quality control department." A stated accreditation body that does not appear in any public registry or ILAC signatory list. A certificate number that the accreditation body's own search tool cannot locate. Results reported to a precision (for example, purity to four decimal places) that exceeds what the stated method can realistically resolve. And test dates or batch numbers that are inconsistent between the COA and any accompanying shipping or packaging documentation.
None of these signs alone proves a certificate is unreliable, and legitimate laboratories occasionally have registry indexing lags. But two or more of these patterns together are reason to request clarification or treat the certificate as unverified.
